really. i’m not making this up. kohler, an otherwise reputable maker of toilets and other plumbing tomfoolery, has released the C3 toilet seat, with remote control. it has “three temperature settings, bidet functionality, a warm-air fan for partial drying, a lighted bowl that eliminates the need to turn on a light at night, a deodorizer that minimizes unpleasant odors, a Quiet-Close cover that prevents slamming and a remote control. Just like the seating/driving/heating in a luxury auto, you can have “personal settings” adjustable by a remote control.”
the copy on kohler’s website says:
C3 toilet seats with bidet functionality use the naturally soothing quality of water as a refreshing, hygienic alternative to toilet tissue, offer cleanliness, comfort and convenience for all users.
Features two separate water nozzles for the anterior and posterior that spray the user with warm aerated water
Constructed of anti-microbial plastic
A user sensor ensures someone is sitting on the seat before the functions are activated
Heated seat with three different temperature settings
Quiet-Close™ Quick-Release™ toilet seat
Side arm control provides user-friendly function controls
Lighted bowl eliminates the need to turn on a light at night
Energy save mode reduces energy consumption when the seat is not in use
NOTE: Requires 120V, 15A, 60 Hz electrical receptacle protected by Class A GFCI
and it list prices for “$750.00 and up”.
all of this raises a few questions in my mind…
1. who spends $750 on a toilet seat?
2. if it’s $750 “and up”, what’s the “up”? and what more do you get if you are willing to pay the “up”?
3. i’m really not sure i want a “warm air fan for partial drying”. in fact, i’m not even sure it’s morally appropriate.
4. where would one keep the remote control? and when would one use it? while sitting on the seat, or while approaching it?
5. is the C3 web-enabled? because maybe then i’d be interested…

I remember a few years back reading that luxury toilets were actually very popular in some countries in Asia … that it wasn’t unusual for people to have a thousand dollar commode in some cities. Apparently the thought was that the cities were so crowded and the apartments so small that the only place of true privacy was the bathroom … so people were totally pimping them out so they could enjoy their solitude.
Maybe that could be a new reality show … pimp my bano!
Comment by Matthew McNutt 07.05.07 @ 11:00 amI must admit that I know someone with a toilet with these and more features. I have even used it. The heated seat is just disconcerting, especially if you are home alone and forgot about the feature.
“Someone’s in house,” you think, “And they’ve just used the toilet!”
My own toilet is old school and I think I’ll stick with that.
Peace,
Jamie
My aunt and uncle actually have one of these in their house! He’s in the piping/toilet/faucet fixtures business, so he got it WAAAAAAYYY discounted.
It’s crazy. The lid opens up when you walk up to it. It’s kind of scary actually; I wouldn’t want one…

Comment by 07.05.07 @ 2:50 pmok i give up. rest assured that there is a creepy photo of the toilet in the dark with a demonic blue hue emanating out of the cracks of the seat. (pardon the multiple puns)
I just got back from Jr. High camp… give me a break.
Comment by 07.05.07 @ 2:52 pmSuch toilets are very common in Japan, where I have discovered them on various work trips, and also even throughout a University there which hosted the first Global Conference on Ethics Economics and Religion.
It can be quite interesting discovering the button functionality, as the buttons are coded in Japanese.
As to the remote I wonder if it is radio wave functional which would mean that the remote could be operated from outside the room, when someone else is inside the room?
Tastewise.
Comment by David 07.05.07 @ 5:33 pmI hade a toilet just like that while teaching jr. high in Japan. We had NO heat in the house (in 2004-2005 sleeping in coats and hats, ice in the shower, and putting stuff in the fridge to keep it from freezing) yet we had a toilet just like that. You could see your breath, but at least your butt was warm.
Comment by 07.05.07 @ 7:47 pmDoes it bother anyone that this post will get more comments than something life changing? Not me. I can only tell you that just the other day I thought, “Hmmm. I could use a hot tub for my butt.” I love the idea and can say that we currently have interns and garden hoses for these kinds of jobs.

Dude… I love the idea. I will readily admit that when I stay in hotels with a bidet… I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with that. As a HS student I actually thought the first one I ever saw was for foot-washing. Now, a remote for the toilet… I like that.
